Place Name Time Age Division Pace

8:00 am; Nice weather; start and finish Corporate Woods Notes: This was a unique event for this area and the first time in the U.S. this year. The design was to do a 10K race with a rest period before the next part, a 5K. The total racing time was used to determine the winners. They also gave awards to the winners in 10-year age divisions and Alan came in 3rd/4 (70+) because the 4th-place person, a runner, slowed appreciably during the 5K, as did most of the racers. Actually the oldest racer was only 78 (AP). Sunday Cavallaro ran the two races and came in 2nd out of 9 in her age division-and the winner was the fastest person in the world in the 55-59 division. Sunday’s time was a terrific 1:20:26 and she would have come in third in the next younger age division. Mark Landry walked/jogged the 15K total (1:56) while still recovering from a leg injury. This was one of the shortest distances that Mark has raced since he is more accustomed to full and half-marathons.

This was a record-breaking year for the Heartland Racewalkers in the Brew to Brew. We had three teams of 5 walkers and also supplied 4 volunteers. Once again we had a combination of veterans and rookies (although we were missing out “general” (Alan) who couldn’t be with us. Dave Couts, a national champion racewalker, took Alan’s place and led his team to the fastest finish since 2001 (although the distances haven’t always been the same). After the handicaps were applied, the winning team was the Whiz-Bang Walkers, led by our veteran captain, BJ Thornburg. The weather was favorable this year and the course finished at the old termination point on the north side of the bridge in Lawrence. Our teams beat a large number of running teams in the age- and gender-based running divisions. The mileage shown is approximate. See the NEWS and PICTURES links for more information.
